Time flies... sometimes

A year ago today I started my current job. Which I love. I actually feel like I've been there forever, but that doesn't have anything to do with the job itself.  Being in an almost constant state of waiting makes time seem to go slowly.

This last year has felt like the longest year of my life.  Truthfully, the last 3 years have seemed to take forever, but especially this most recent one.  Often it has felt like time has been at a complete standstill.

Waiting for a chance to go forward with surrogacy.
Waiting to move to Florida to be with my husband.
Waiting for our house to sell.
Waiting, waiting, and more miserable waiting.

(Can you tell that waiting is my favorite??)

They say time flies when you're having fun so it would only make sense for the reverse to also be true.

This past year has crawled and it has not been fun.

My husband has been unemployed for most of the year.  Soooo not fun - for either of us.

And although I am immensely grateful and excited about having a baby in just a few short months (!), my lack of involvement and physical separation while waiting for her arrival has been torture.

(Please don't tell me it will be worth it.  That's the single most unhelpful thing you could say to someone who is tired of waiting.)

Top it all off with the fact that I haven't physically felt good for more than a year and it's no wonder time has felt like it's been inching by at a snail's pace.

I hate to sound like I'm complaining. That's not my goal with this post.  I'm keenly aware that things could be much much worse.  I'm truly just musing more than anything else; pondering how viewpoints can be so vastly different even though we're all allotted the same amount of time in this life.

People with kids always talk about how fast they grow up.

"It seems like just yesterday when..."

"You'll want to freeze time."

"You won't want her to grow up."

"I can't believe she's old enough to..."

That may all be true... but I say bring it on.

I'm planning to embrace every stage of our precious child's life with joy, and do my very best to be thankful that time is moving quickly... even if it is going "too fast."  Because I know the alternative is worse, and I'm so very weary of "slow."

I realize that once she arrives I may change my mind, but right now?

Right now I can't wait for time to start flying.

Random Musings

  • I love dogs, but really... WHY must they eat poop??  Ugh.  This is the very reason it turns my stomach when I see people allowing their dogs to eat after/with them.  Or lick them on the mouth.  Ick.  And don't say "my dog doesn't eat poop," because I didn't think mine did either.  *shudder*
  • I'm annoyed that the Walgreen's checker dropped my rewards card behind the counter last night and was unable to find it.  He issued me a new one and I haven't checked yet to see if I can get my points transferred to the new card.  I think he should have looked harder so I wouldn't have to check into that.  Grrrrr.
  • I find it rude and inconsiderate that the lady from the office next door camps out in our shared, single-seater bathroom for 30 minutes every day while she primps and changes clothes for her 2nd job.  There are far fewer men in our building, so couldn't she use their bathroom as her dressing room??  I'm just sayin'.
  • Speaking of shared facilities in my office building...  Question:  Why am I always throwing away moldy grapes that aren't mine??  Answer: Because apparently I'm the only one who is disgusted by the pigsty that is our office kitchen.  I guarantee that I'm the one who will eventually break down and deep-clean the stinky garbage disposal, too.
  • Here's something that will make my mother very happy!  Several weeks ago I started forcing myself to drink 64 ounces of water a day.  Recently I've noticed a very strange thing...  I crave water.  As someone who used to barely drink a glass a day, I never thought that would be possible.  Now it's not unusual at the end of a day to realize that I've consumed well over 96 ounces.  No one is more shocked by that than me.
  • Although I am a decent cook, for some reason I am horrible at baking.  Even though I'm very aware of this fact due to years of experience, occasionally I'm just in the mood for failure.  After 2 failed attempts and 1 moderate success this week, I'm happy to report that this is now out of my system.  Oh, and the next time I want cupcakes I'm buying them.
  • I took a cake decorating class with a friend a few years ago.  It was kinda fun, but I hated the cleanup part with a passion.  I was reminded of this after I decided to decorate the {moderate} cupcakes I made last night.  Those tools will be tucked away for a long time, and very possibly never used again.

Random Musings

  • I'm not sure why, but I keep forgetting that I have more than one set of dishes.  I love my second set, but we very rarely use them.
Just last month when I was taking a picture of a food item I was going to blog about, I mentioned to Scott that I wish we had some "classic" dishes that I could use for taking pictures of food.  And then I proceeded to take the picture on a paper plate. (???)  My regular dishes are Americana, which I love-love-love.  I just don't want them featured in every food picture I take.  My red and white ones would look good with just about anything.  So why can't I remember I have them????

  • I don't dance.  Trust me.  I have no rhythm.  But there is a song that I do a finger dance to in my Jeep when I'm driving down the road.  You will never see it.  Unless you happen to be driving in the car next to me when it comes on the radio.  It's nothing special.  Certainly not as elaborate as this awesome video (which is totally worth watching!!)
  • Why is turning the heat/air conditioning on for the first time of any given season such a big deal to some people?  "I waited as long as I could but finally caved this morning and turned on the heat."  I understand that people are trying to save money, but if I'm cold, the heat comes on.  And if I'm hot, the air comes on.  I don't believe in being uncomfortable when it's within my power to prevent it.  We never set our thermostat at an extreme temperature either way.  Just enough to keep the chill off or the humidity out.  And somehow, we still manage to pay the bills...  ;o)
  • One of the "joys" of being a receptionist is transferring calls.  I don't typically mind this since the caller isn't wanting to talk to me, and I'm just passing them on to someone else.  That's the way it's supposed to work, anyway.  What is annoying is when the person you are transferring to won't take the call ("Put them in my voicemail!") and then the caller gets irate with you.  Or when the person DOES take the call, but feels the need to groan loudly and complain to you about who is calling (I'm required to stay on the line to let them know who is calling before I can complete the transfer).  Or when the person simply won't answer their phone, and you KNOW they're sitting right there at their desk.  (Must be nice.  I wish I could ignore MY phone...)  Obviously some people have this mentality:

  • One closing Random Musing for today....

    Pie is better than cake.

    It's true.

    Ask anyone.

    Except for Dawn and Rachel

On second thought, just ask Thelma.  Because she agrees with me.
